Girls and boys, it's almost Día del Niños (Children's Day) in Mexico. Celebrate by reading! In fact, celebrate every day by reading everyday. Books can be bought so that you begin to form your own library, you can go to a public library or Sala de lectura (a program of reading rooms in Mexico), you can organize a reading club with kids from your street or neighborhood and/or friends and exchange them. There are many ways of getting books. Among them, perhaps each kids can donate a book and someone from the group can read it aloud or each one can choose the book he or she likes the most and read it on their own and later comment about it. The books can also be borrowed and taken home, where they can be enjoyed before you turn off the lights (or under the covers with a flashlight). You can even make simple books with the stories told by all. Books are also sold in bookstores and used books shops. Another option is opening a reading room in your neighborhood. Here is a link to see if there's one in your area (of Mexico) or if an adult you know wants to become a mediator in yours: http://programanacionalsalasdelectura.conaculta.gob.mx/

¡Es verano! Summer is here!
¡Es verano! Summer is here!
Después, ve a buscar otro y después otro y después otro...
Besides enjoying your vacations, your liberty, the heat, lemonade, your friends and family, it's an excellent moment to look for books and enjoy a good time. You can download them into your digital reader though, for me, the best thing to do is go to the library or bookstore to get one of paper. I love the aroma of paper and ink and to hold a book in my hands. I fully live the adventure and, if there are lots of illustrations in the book, I turn the pages little by little so that I can stop and see them carefully. This is especially true of picture books and some of my favorite authors and illustrators are Philip Pullman, C.S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, Anthony Browne, David Weisner, Robert Sabuda (who does amazing pop-up books), Maucie Sendak, Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss and many, many more.
Besides, books are magical because, without moving from your favorite chair, you'll experience one adventure after another along with some incredible characters.
Here are some suggestions for Summer reading. There are, of course, many, many more that you can read and with them you'll be thrilled, you'll investigate,
you'll laugh, you'll be scared and perhaps you'll even cry. Look for them in the shelves and take the one you like the most and I hope you have a good time. Then, look for another and then another and then another...

¡Libros nuevos!/New books!

Both were published by Ediciones SM of Mexico. The one about the flowers was illustrated by Valeria Gallo and the one about the insects by Margarita Sada. The photos were taken by Ilán Rabchinskey, my son. The books are interesting because, besides the fun facts, there are recipes. So, get moving! Get into the kitchen and give an adult a chance to help you with a few things. You'll have fun and then you'll enjoy what you prepared.
Soon you'll be able to find them in Gandhi and Fondo de Cultura Económica bookstores and at book fairs.

Dia Internacional del Libro para Niños/ International Day of Books for Kids
Today is the celebration of the life and work of Han Christian Andersen, author of The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, and The Little Mermaid, among others. If you haven't read them yet, do it today so that you can celebrate with the rest of the world. Then you can write to me and tell me which one you liked the most.

Aventura con un elefante/Adventure with an elephant
¡Te vas a divertir mucho! Además, lo puedes escribir y puedes hacer tus propias ilustraciones.
Y luego me lo mandas :-)
What would happen if one day, on the way out of your house or school, you found a small elephant? This elephant is no normal elephant. In fact, it's a very special elephant because it's bright pink! You'll say that that's not possible, that elephants are gray, but I'll tell you that this elephant, since the day it was born, is that very strange color for one of its kind.
Now comes the fun part...
Since I know you have a lot of imagination, I want you to imagine:
1. Why is it that color?
2. Is it a boy or a girl?
3. What did its mom or dad say when it was born and they knew that their baby was different to all the rest? Surely they loved it from the moment they first saw it but, even so, they must have been very surprised.
4. What is is doing outside of your house or school without its mom or dad?
5. Don't forget to give it a name!
Now that you've imagined all that, tell yourself a story about the little elephant and/or tell it to your brothers and/or sisters (even though they bother you) and you can even change it's color if you don´t like bright pink that much. You're going to have a lot of fun! Besides, you can write it down and make your own illustrations.
And then you can send it to me :-)

Capaz
3.
¿Para qué quiero que te diviertas?
4.
Leer es perder el tiempo.
5.
Prefiero comprarte un juguete, aunque sea mucho
más caro, porque siquiera lo usas más.
6.
No te gusta leer.
leerlo. Por eso ya no te compro libros.
7.
Puedes aprender cosas que a mí no me convienen.
8.
Te diviertes igual viendo la televisión y no me
cuesta nada.
9.
16. ¿Para
qué? Yo no leo y de todos modos me gano la vida.
¿Ya pensaste en
que les vas a responder?
Mándame tus
sugerencias y después te diré las mías.
